Should I Hire a Cleaning Company?
Should I hire a cleaning company? To hire or not to hire: that is the question. Whether ’tis nobler in the mind – enough of that, let’s get down to brass tacks. Heck, I just don’t know the answer – and that’s the truth! There are a ton of reasons to hire a cleaning company or maid service but whether YOU should or not, is hard to know. Answer these 15 questions to find out what’s right for you.
Do you like to clean?
There are a LOT of us who do. I’m one of them. Don’t worry that there won’t be stuff to clean, there will. Even if you have a weekly service, there will still be cleaning to do. Counters and sinks don’t stay clean on their own. Floors don’t stay clean if you have kids and/or pets. Don’t forget that you will still get to clean out all your cabinets, drawers, and closets. Oh, joy!
Do you have time to clean?
Right, stupid question. But I’m leaving it in just in case. Maybe you have time on the weekends that you would prefer to spend cleaning. Or maybe you don’t have any hobbies. You might be one of the 1%-3% of people who needs very little sleep each night and you can spend that extra time cleaning – call me jealous, but I’d still be doing something else, truth be told.
Do you like or need to have things in your environment clean, neat, and tidy?
Hey, some people really don’t care. Don’t judge. If you aren’t bothered by those rings in the toilet or the dingy looking sinks and counters, or a bit of stickiness on the floors, you may not be a candidate for cleaning or maid service. But if it really makes you sigh with relief to have everything clean all at the same time, you might be.
Do you have people who will clean for free?
Husband, wife, kids, etc. I can hear a lot of you laughing hysterically. But maybe you like to think of cleaning as a family responsibility. Maybe a bonding experience? Hey, if the family enjoys cleaning and you can get them to do it to your standards, more power to you – and maybe you could send me those tips.
Would it be cheaper to move?
I’m only slightly kidding with this one. Sometimes things get BAD fast. Truthfully, if you have dead “things” in your home or have to follow a path to get from room to room, hiring a cleaning company probably should not be on your To-Do list. Think bigger!
Are you comfortable having people in your home?
Even relatives can be hard to take sometimes. Getting comfortable with people in your home can actually be a sticking point for some people. Does it help to know that the cleaning technicians are heavily screened and really aren’t concerned with your “stuff” anyway? They are there to get a job done and they are more likely to notice those huge cobwebs than anything else. Also, did you know that people who clean like dirt? Not only is it job security, but cleaning makes them feel accomplished. It’s a great feeling!

Do you deserve a break?
I mean seriously, don’t we all – at least sometimes? Maybe you’re one of those people that like cleaning your home and don’t want to pass it on. No problem there, but do you ever feel like you just need a break? There’s no law that says you have to hire a cleaning service to clean for you for the rest of your life. Maybe a single cleaning would be perfect for you. Or maybe you just need some help with the deep cleaning things to get you on track for your maintenance cleaning.
Are all your friends doing it?
I know your Mom would tell you that doesn’t make it right, but sometimes our friends know what’s best. I don’t know about this for sure, but if all your friends have a service, they may know something you don’t – like it’s cheaper than you think, more helpful than you think, or something else. But do you know what’s going on with that?
Do you know someone who really needs a helping hand?
Can you think of a better gift? Hiring a cleaning service for someone else is seriously one of the MOST appreciated and best-remembered gifts of all time. It may take some coordination (unless you buy gift cards), so if you don’t want to invest the time, it might be easier to just buy a plant.
Are you so picky that no matter what anyone else does you won’t be happy?
The whole point of hiring a cleaning or maid service is to lighten your load, make things better for you, give you time to do better stuff. If you KNOW you aren’t going to be happy, what’s the point? Buy yourself some chocolate instead and call it good.
Can you afford a house cleaning service?
Is a clean home more important to you than your daily coffee? Most people are surprised to find out just how affordable house cleaning services can be. Especially when compared with the amount of time it takes to do the job yourself! But if you know you can’t afford it, why torture yourself thinking about it – unless it’s to figure out how to get the money. Yeah, that would be my plan!

Did you buy your home as an investment?
Who takes minimal care of an investment? Hiring a cleaning company to protect your investment can be money well spent. Make sure you are hiring a professional company that knows and understands the care required to maintain and protect the surfaces of your home. Do this especially if you know that you are not as knowledgeable as you’d like to be. Don’t take unnecessary risks.
If something is damaged or broken is it going to freak you out?
Accidents happen, it’s the nature of the beast. When things have repeatedly been touched the chance of them being broken increases. We’ve all had that picture fall off the wall when we’re nowhere around or went to pick up a cup only to have the handle break off in our hands. If you have already decided that people who clean rush around and don’t take care of your items, you may be setting yourself up for frustration vs. the wonderful experience that most people have.
Do you have any professional cleaning experience yourself?
Who knows what you’re missing out on? Maybe it could be even better than you know. If you do, awesome. If you don’t, are there things you aren’t even noticing that isn’t being done as well as they could? Are there easier ways to get things done? Is your home really as clean as it could or should be?
How much is your energy or attitude affected by an unclean space?
This might be the only truly important question. I might even say, start here. If you know that your quality of life deteriorates rapidly when your home is not clean, you really SHOULD be looking to hire a cleaning company – and sooner is better. Get them on a schedule, too, so you are never adversely affected.
Assuming you read all these questions and answered honestly, you may have a better idea about whether you should hire a cleaning company or not. For my money, it is one of the best investments I make! Good luck and happy cleaning, whether you do it or someone else does!
