Sullivan’s Island is a 3.3 square mile island located directly across the Charleston Harbor from the City of Charleston. By road it is nine miles from Charleston. The history of the island is dominated by Fort Moultrie, which is named after the commander of the fort who helped hold it against an onslaught by the British during the Revolutionary War. Edgar Allen Poe was stationed at the fort in the 1820s and many of the island’s streets are named after his famous works. On April 12th, 1861, soldiers at Fort Moultrie fired the first shots of the Civil War upon Federal forces at Fort Sumter, a sea fort in the Charleston Harbor. The Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse is one of the last lighthouses to be built in the U.S. Standing 140 feet tall, it features a unique triangular and exceptionally thin design, making the black-and-white structure easy to spot on the island.
