Fewer People Plan Spring Cleaning in 2021
According to a survey conducted by the American Cleaning Institute, only 69% of Americans plan to do their annual spring cleaning this year. That is down 8% from 2020. While the United States is still in the midst of mitigating COVID-19, why would that number go down? It is precisely because of the pandemic. Throughout the past year, more people (55%) have been deep cleaning their homes on a regular basis to stave off any unwanted germs. With their homes being cleaned regularly, fewer people feel the need for the deep spring clean.
“Spring cleaning typically involves ‘deep cleaning’ rooms throughout your home. With so many people working from home during the past year, many have been ‘deep cleaning’ their homes more frequently. That can explain why fewer people feel the need to spring clean in 2021,” said Brian Sansoni, ACI Senior Vice President, Communications and Outreach.
Among those who plan to spring clean, 54% say they plan to clean and organize the same amount in 2021 compared to 2020, while 37% said they plan to clean more this year. The top spots they will focus on include:
- Kitchen (26%)
- Bathroom (19%)
- Closet (19%)
- Bedroom (18%)
- Family room (13%)
More than one-third (37%) of survey respondents said they have more cleaning knowledge now than before the pandemic due to increased messaging from cleaning and health experts on the importance of disinfecting surfaces.
