Moving into a new home can be exciting, stressful, and tiring

Cleaning a house before moving in might be the last thing you are thinking about. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of moving, only to become overwhelmed when the movers arrive. But the perfect time to clean is when the home is empty. Cleaning a new home can be a struggle with boxes and furniture in the way. You may start to fill cabinets, only to find they are still dirty from the last homeowner. Or you may be ready for a hot shower after unpacking boxes, only to question the cleanliness of the shower. You can help reduce stress by taking advantage of the time available from when the paperwork is signed until the movers arrive.

While it might sound like cleaning an empty house is a breeze, there’s also more to clean. Cleaning an empty house allows you to get to those areas that will soon become hard to reach. You will have full access to all closets, cabinets, baseboards, and floors without worrying about furniture being in the way. Light fixtures and blinds are easier to reach with no tables to navigate around or drapes in the way.

Preparing Your Home to Clean

First, make sure you have electricity to run the vacuum and water to clean with. Call your electricity/gas and water companies and get these services put in your name as soon as feasible so there is no interruption in service. In addition, if there is any work to be done in the home, make sure it is done before you get in there to clean since there is nothing more frustrating than to have to go back and re-clean an area because a workman left sawdust, dirt, and trash. Now is also a good time to replace all air filters throughout your home.

Make sure you have a good supply of cleaning chemicals and cleaning towels and a couple of buckets to carry them in. For the sake of efficiency, each person who cleans should have a bucket and a set of chemicals and towels to clean with, so no time is wasted looking for what is needed. You will need an all-purpose cleaner, a degreaser, and a window and glass cleaner, plus a toilet cleaner and shower cleaner. Microfiber towels clean much better than regular towels and well worth the investment in money.

An Organized Approach to Cleaning

Now that you have all your towels and cleaning chemicals ready, take a lesson from the professionals and clean with a plan. For each room, start at the door and clean to your right around the room, going from top to bottom and back to the front of whatever you meet. Once you’re finished going around the room, do the center, like ceiling fans and light fixtures. Lastly, vacuum and mop (if needed for hardwood floors).

Your bathrooms should be the first rooms you clean. These are the rooms that you will have an immediate need for. You can take advantage of an empty bathroom to get the tub, shower, sink, and toilets cleaned to perfection. Then after a long day of unpacking, you can relax in the tub knowing it is clean and ready to help you unwind.

Kitchen cupboards are another area you will want to focus on. You can clean every cabinet and drawer to remove debris left by the previous homeowner. Since the cupboards will be empty, you can wash them inside and out. That way when you unpack, you can fill the cupboards immediately. Now is also a great time to reline your cabinets with contact paper, so they are ready to be organized and filled when the movers arrive.

You can also utilize this time to move the stove and the refrigerator in order to clean behind it. You’ll also want to clean the coils on your refrigerator. And of course, by cleaning inside the fridge it will be ready to use after your first trip to the supermarket. Cleaning the bulky bottom drawers in the refrigerator can sometimes be frustrating since the drawer may not fit into the kitchen sink and it seems like you also end up being soaked in the process. One tip would be to place the larger refrigerator drawers in the bathtub while you clean them. You will have plenty of room and all the water will stay contained in the tub. This will make a somewhat clumsy task a little bit easier.
